Energy Sector Climate Change Scenarios

Background

Aotearoa is dependent on a thriving and efficient energy sector, which now faces many challenges in the face of the urgent realities of climate change. Extreme weather events, rising temperatures and the increasing regulatory pressure to decarbonise mean stakeholders in the energy sector must adapt, evolve, and explore a range of plausible climate futures to become climate resilient.

The Aotearoa Circle, with PwC as Secretariat, convened leaders from across the energy sector to develop a set of climate change scenarios. These scenarios provide visibility to the potential impacts of climate change across the sector’s value chain and provide a comparable and consistent basis for the participating organisations own risk assessments and scenario analysis.

Energy Sector Climate Change Scenarios released

This report provides a set of Climate Change Scenarios for New Zealand energy sector. These scenarios explore what the sector could look like under different, hypothetical climate futures. This report is designed to be used by Climate Reporting Entities (those required by law to report on their climate impacts and dependencies) and others who are adhering to XRB standards.  It will also be of use to any person or entity with a stake in the future of our energy sector, as New Zealand considers how to prepare for the impacts of climate change.
