Future Fit Shipping
About this workstream
Future Fit Shipping is The Aotearoa Circle’s new workstream aimed at supporting New Zealand in decarbonising the maritime industry.
Aotearoa is a small, open trading nation with an export industry valued at $68.7 billion in 2023. While our prosperity is underpinned by international trade, this dependence also presents both risks and opportunities.
New Zealand is heavily dependent on shipping for trade. By “greening” shipping, our exporters will be able to reduce their scope three emissions. Not only will this reduce their overall climate impact, it will also enable us to remain competitive as a trading nation, in a world where better environmental performance is expected by our trading partners and customers.
Embarking on this initiative will help progress our trans-Tasman commitments (2+2 Climate and Finance Joint Statement) to reduce shipping emissions and show global leadership on this important issue.
The Aotearoa Circle has partnered with Deloitte for this work. This project will be informed through broad engagement with key stakeholders and experts across the sector, producing a report with three key components:
Green Shipping Corridor
We will provide an overview of key considerations for setting up a green corridor between New Zealand and Australia, including actions required and possible solutions. The report will include recommendations for progressing enhanced collaboration, investment opportunities, and opportunities to improve regulation.
Fuel Roadmaps
We will produce four roadmaps for alternative fuel options: Biofuels, Liquid Nitrogen Gas, Methanol, and Ammonia. These roadmaps will cover key considerations for deploying these fuels to support a trans-Tasman green shipping corridor, including infrastructure requirements, regulation, timelines, financing, risks and opportunities. They will also connect with ongoing work on Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
Economic Impact Assessment
The report will also assess the economic impact for New Zealand if no action is taken.
Launch Webinar
In November 2024 we held a launch webinar for this workstream. We were joined by keynote speaker, Angela Gillham, Chief Executive Officer of Maritime Industry Australia and Deloitte Partners John Marker, Matt Walden and Liza Van Der Merwe, who presented an overview of the project.
