Transport Sector Climate Scenarios
Overview
Climate change is no longer a distant threat – it's here, and it's impacting every aspect of our lives, including Aotearoa New Zealand’s vital transport system. Sea-level rise, intensified rainfall, and extreme weather events are contributing to road, rail, and infrastructure damage, costing the New Zealand transport sector billions each year, at the same time as the sector looks to transition to a low-carbon future. As the effects of climate change become increasingly evident, and the imperative to decarbonise more pressing, it's crucial for organisations in the sector to understand how the way we move people and goods into, around, and out of Aotearoa might change in the future.
The Aotearoa Circle, with KPMG as Secretariat, undertook the development of a set of XRB (External Reporting Board) aligned Integrated Climate-Related Scenarios that explore what the transport sector in Aotearoa New Zealand could look like under different climate futures. These scenarios were intended to provide participants with valuable, collective insights into the future of the sector, as well as building the skills and baseline scenarios needed for entity-level analysis, which are essential for conducting climate risk assessments, and building resilience in the sector.
Transport Sector Climate Change Scenarios released
Transportation is key to both our wellbeing and sustainable prosperity. It is a requirement for migration, for community cohesion, for food distribution and for the provision of other essential goods and services. However, our transport system is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This report lays out several plausible but challenging, hypothetical futures for our transport sector.
This report is designed to be used by Climate Reporting Entities (those required by law to report on their climate impacts and dependencies) and others who are adhering to XRB standards. It will also be a useful reference for New Zealand’s decision makers and for any and all businesses, iwi and communities who want to understand how climate change could impact our transport sector.

Launch of the Transport Sector Climate Scenarios
On the 27th of June, we launched the Transport Sector Climate Scenarios report. Figuring out what the future of our transport systems could look like, entailed some challenging conversations and those conversations continued at our launch event.
