Low Carbon Aotearoa
An Energy Roadmap to 2030
Kaupapa
This workstream came from the Fenwick Forum report in June 2020
The roadmap outlines a low carbon path that ensures energy security, affordability and a just transition towards the government’s target of net zero carbon emissions across the economy by 2050. It also identifies and provide solutions for managing risks and opportunities for an evolving integrated energy system whilst also considering the role of diverse energy sources and changing technology of how consumers use and access energy.
The Aotearoa Circle brought together a diverse Leadership Group (LG) representing the key areas of the energy trilemma (affordability and access, security of supply, and sustainability), and a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) which provided key skills and expertise to deep dive into the issues, barriers, and opportunities. Both the LG and TAG included energy suppliers and distributors, consumers, tangata whenua, regulators and interest groups.
The Low Carbon Energy Roadmap was launched 4 March 2022 It was presented at the Downstream conference (an Energy Industry gathering) in March 2022.
Who has been consulted?
We consulted widely with partners of the Aotearoa Circle and those with a specific interest in our country’s energy future. We welcomed all input to our roadmap development.
To ensure the LCER includes a Māori perspective and includes a tikanga-based approach to decision-making, we adopted He Ara Waiora, a framework used by both The Treasury and the Climate Change Commission to understand waiora, human wellbeing.
He Ara Waiora presents a holistic, intergenerational approach to wellbeing and poses a set of questions directly related to the key principles of tikanga, tiakitanga, kotahitanga, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga.
