Seafood Nature, Climate & Te Ao Māori Scenarios

About this workstream

The New Zealand seafood industry is facing significant challenges due to the combined climate and nature crises, and evidence shows that tackling these issues separately can create adverse outcomes and missed opportunities.

The Aotearoa Circle has partnered with KPMG in a world-first, developing sector-based scenarios that incorporate climate, nature, and Te Ao Māori. These "Integrated Scenarios" aim to set a standard for similar initiatives both locally and globally. This workstream will demonstrate how considering climate, nature and indigenous perspectives together, can enhance strategic decision making and improve long-term seafood sector resilience to the challenges posed by the joint nature-climate crisis.

Our hope is that this work equips the marine fisheries and aquaculture industries with the tools and insights needed to tackle future challenges. By anticipating changes related to these crises, the sector can better seize opportunities and strengthen its long-term resilience.

This project will also update The Aotearoa Circle’s 2020 Marine Sector Climate Scenarios, released before the External Reporting Board (XRB) issued the Aotearoa New Zealand Climate Standards

The Aotearoa Circle has partnered with KPMG and key seafood sector stakeholders to complete this work which has three desired outcomes:

  1. Develop a set of sector-specific scenarios incorporating climate, nature, and Te Ao Māori perspectives.

  2. Advance the evolution of integrated climate and nature reporting and risk management across all industries in New Zealand.

  3. Showcase how an indigenous, Te Ao Māori perspective can be included in scenario development to enhance responses to the nature-climate crisis.
