October 2022 Tourism Adaptation Roadmap Update
This month:
We are pleased to update that we have wrapped up all visitor economy workshops and are making good progress through the writing of the final report and adaptation roadmap for the visitor economy.
Final workshops held in Queenstown and Wellington:
The purpose of our final workshops was to identify opportunities presented by adaptation, set objectives for the sector, and position our key goals and targets across three time horizons. This will position the tourism sector so that it can collectively effectively respond and adapt to the pressures of climate change.

We brought together the Leadership Group (LG) for two more review sessions, they discussed:
The adaptation roadmap framework. This included establishing the vision and mission for the roadmap, agreeing the goals and ambition statements, and considering the objectives and actions that had been proposed by the LG/TEG - to ascertain if they resonated with the sector, if they were impactful yet achievable.
The proposed removal of the fourth scenario, Tōmuri. The inclusion of the fourth scenario was something the co-chairs had wished to explore but with a small amount of international reference data, detail was limited to draft the scenario narrative. It was agreed to remove this scenario and re-consider the Pokonoa scenario and how it played out under a 2oC world.
The te ao Māori framework and guiding principles. We have settled on using manu (birds) to guide us in this mahi. The Huia bird, which is full of wisdom but extinct represents looking back before we look forward, and the Pīwakawaka (fantail) guides us forward as a symbol of hope in our journey ahead. We have also been kindly gifted the Tiwaiwaka Principles from Pa Ropata, an esteemed Matauranga within te ao Māori and sustainability. The principles are as follows:
